The Three Inner Energies of Ayurveda: Ojas, Tejas, and Prana

Have you ever felt completely exhausted, like your battery is totally drained? Or have you felt super sharp and creative one day, but anxious and scattered the next?

Ancient wellness traditions like Ayurveda look at how our energy flows to help explain these everyday feelings. Ayurveda (a traditional system of health from India) teaches that our mind and body are run by three master energies: Prana, Tejas, and Ojas.

Think of these three as a glowing candle:

  • Ojas is the wax and the oil that keeps the candle going.

  • Tejas is the bright flame that gives off light and heat.

  • Prana is the invisible oxygen and breeze that keeps the flame flickering and alive.

Without a strong foundation, a candle burns out fast. That is why Ojas is the most important foundation for the other two. Let's break down what each one means, how to tell if they are balanced, and easy ways to boost them every day!

1. Ojas: Your Deep Vitality and Reserve Tank

What it means: Ojas (pronounced OH-jas) is your deep vitality, immunity, and inner strength. It is your body’s reserve tank. When your Ojas is strong, you feel grounded, calm, and able to bounce back easily when life gets stressful. It is built up slowly through good rest, nourishing food, and peace of mind.

  • Signs of Balance: You feel strong, calm, and healthy. You rarely get sick, and your skin has a natural, healthy glow.

  • Signs of Imbalance: You feel totally burned out, exhausted all the time, anxious, weak, or catch every bug that goes around.

  • How to Build Ojas:

    • Eat warm, nourishing, wholesome foods (like root vegetables, warm soups, and healthy fats like ghee or olive oil).

    • Get plenty of deep, quality sleep.

    • Take slow, quiet moments during your day to rest and unplug.

2. Tejas: Your Inner Fire and Focus

What it means: Tejas (pronounced TAY-jas) is your inner spark, metabolism, and mental brightness. It is the energy of intelligence, digestion, and transformation. Tejas helps you digest not just your food, but also your thoughts and emotions, so you can learn and understand the world clearly.

  • Signs of Balance: You have a sharp memory, a clear mind, good digestion, and a healthy passion for life without getting overly angry or frustrated.

  • Signs of Imbalance: You might feel snappy, overly critical, or burnt out with a hot temper. On the flip side, you might feel dull, confused, or unable to focus.

  • How to Build Tejas:

    • Eat brightly colored, fresh foods and use mild, warming spices (like ginger or cinnamon).

    • Spend time soaking in gentle morning sunlight.

    • Practice activities that spark your curiosity and healthy problem-solving.

3. Prana: Your Life Force and Breath

What it means: Prana (pronounced PRAH-nah) is the vital life force energy that moves through everything. It travels on your breath. Every time you inhale, you are taking in Prana. It keeps your heart beating, your lungs expanding, and your thoughts moving.

  • Signs of Balance: You feel light, enthusiastic, creative, and full of fresh energy. Your breathing is deep, steady, and smooth.

  • Signs of Imbalance: You feel scattered, nervous, breathless, or restless. You might have trouble sitting still or sleeping because your mind is racing.

  • How to Build Prana:

    • Step outside and spend time in nature (take a walk in the trees or sit by the water).

    • Take slow, deep, intentional breaths throughout your day.

    • Move your body gently with stretching, yoga, or a peaceful walk.

Putting It All Together

Remember, Ojas is the base. If your reserve tank (Ojas) is empty, your inner fire (Tejas) will burn too hot and scorch you, and your life force (Prana) will blow around like a leaf in a windstorm. By taking care of your deep rest and nourishment first, your mind and breath naturally fall into a happy, healthy balance.
